French Open Thoughts Week 1

The big 3 cruise

Federer, Novak and Rafa have all looked good in their opening rounds; only Rafa has dropped a set, last night to David Goffin, the Belgian roadrunner.  Federer was tested in the 3rdround by Casper Ruud, who took him to a tiebreak in the 3rdset but came through in straight sets, hitting 11 aces and 52 winners, the Swiss plays Leonardo Mayer next who he leads 3-0 in the head to heads. Wimbledon Preview 2018

It’s winter in Australia, as evidenced by a balmy 17 degrees today in Sydney. You can imagine the nights are getting a tad chilly, down to a low of 7, this essentially means if you’re staying up during the night watching the tennis on the hallowed turf of Wimbledon these next two weeks you’d better be doing it either by the fireplace in the lounge room or under cozy electric blankets in bed. Halep vs Wozniacki

This is an unlikely final, not for the fact that we have the number 1 and 2 seed up against each other but that in the second round Wozniacki was down 5-1, 40-15 in the 3rd to Croation Jana Fett and escaped, Halep also saved match points in a 9-7 third set nailbiter over Angelique Kerber in the semi finals. Wimbledon Finals Preview

Venus vs Muguruza

Is this the final anybody guessed before the start of the tournament? Probably not but it’s a marquee final nonetheless. Venus at 37 years old, dealing with an autoimmune disorder and mired in a legal wasteland regarding her car accident last month has done incredibly well to compartmentalize all that and play excellent tennis these past 2 weeks.
