French Open Thoughts Week 1 – 2024

Viva Moutet!

French journeyman Corentin Moutet has electrified this rainy French Open. Through three matches the lefty has whipped the local crowd on Court Suzanne Lenglen into a frenzy.

His matches have become more soccer chanting than tennis etiquette. In a third-round victory over Austrian Seb Ofner, Moutet hit 12 underarm serves, winning 9 of the points. His unconventional style and rabid local support will be put to the test next against number 2 seed Jannick Sinner but whatever happens, Moutet is essential viewing.

No alcohol No fun

Tournament organizers banned fans from enjoying a glass of wine or any other alcoholic beverage in their seats after complaints from a few players that fans were getting too rowdy. David Goffin said a fan spat gum at him during his first-round win over French hope Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Iga Swiatek told fans to “respect the players” in an on-court interview. Every sporting event has Muppets and to penalize the many for the behavior of a select few seems heavy-handed but the fun police have spoken.

Alcaraz v Sinner is potential blockbuster semi

Both world number 2 and 3 have allayed injury concerns as they’ve moved unscathed through week one. Alcaraz had a solid straight set win over Seb Korda (27) in the third round and Sinner hasn’t dropped a set in reaching the 4th round against electric Frenchman Moutet. They’re both building nicely and in current form would be favoured to make the semis. This could be the match of the tournament but Tsitsipas is in Alcaraz’s half –  the player most likely to crash this party.
